![]() Making their NFL debuts in 2022 as members of the Pittsburgh Steelers were Connor Heyward (joining his brother, Cameron), DeMarvin Leal, George Pickens, Kenny Pickett, Mark Robinson, Nick Sciba, and Jaylen Warren. They maintained their streak of 19 consecutive non-losing seasons. However, they narrowly missed the playoffs-the Steelers tied with the Miami Dolphins for the last Wild Card spot, but lost the tiebreaker based on the teams' Week 7 head-to-head meeting, won by the Dolphins. Despite the initial setback, the Steelers would have a mid-season turnaround and stay in the playoff hunt through Week 18 and finished with a 9–8 record. ![]() ![]() The Steelers began their season with a 2–6 record, their worst start since 2013, and failed to improve on their 9–7–1 record from 2021. He was succeeded by Omar Khan as general manager and Andy Weidl as assistant general manager on May 25, 2022. It was also the first season since 1999 without long-time general manager Kevin Colbert, as he announced on Januthat after 22 years with the organization, he would step down following the 2022 NFL Draft. This was their first season since 2003 without long-time quarterback Ben Roethlisberger on the roster, as he announced his retirement on January 27, 2022. Cleveland (2-1) travels to Atlanta to face the Falcons next week. The 2022 season was the Pittsburgh Steelers' 90th in the National Football League (NFL) and their 16th under head coach Mike Tomlin. Pittsburgh (1-2) hosts the New York Jets in Week 4. The game was closer than the final score indicates, as Cleveland recovered a rugby play fumble in the end zone on the last play of the contest to push the lead from 23-17 to 29-17. Mitch Trubisky was 10 for 15 for 42 yards on short throws, which gave him a meager 2.8 yards per attempt on those aerials. Steelers rookie receiver George Pickens made a one-handed highlight reel catch for 36 yards in the first half that drew comparisons to Odell Beckham Jr.’s incredible Sunday Night Football catch against the Cowboys in 2014, but it wasn’t enough to offset an abysmal short pass showing by this offense. David Njoku was the primary recipient of these throws, as he caught all nine targets for 89 yards and a touchdown. Cleveland’s performance also held up very well in the advanced metrics for the game, as its 9.1 expected points added (EPA) on planned rushing plays is the second highest total in a game in the 2022 season.īrissett was superb on short passes (aerials thrown 10 or fewer yards downfield), as he went 19 for 25 for 170 yards and two touchdowns at that route depth level. The Browns racked up 171 yards on 38 carries, with Nick Chubb posting 113 of those yards on 23 carries. That plan has failed so far, which makes you wonder why Mike Tomlin is going out of his way to protect his rookie quarterback if the defense isn’t going to hold up its end of the deal.Īnother performance like this defense came up with Thursday and you might as well turn the offense over to Kenny Pickett, because this team isn’t going anywhere.Ĭleveland used a combination of a powerhouse rushing attack and efficient passing from Jacoby Brissett to earn a 29-17 victory over Pittsburgh in the Week 3 Thursday Night Football matchup. When the Steelers put together their roster, it was based on having an elite defense that would keep them in games, sort of like the 2019 season that ultimately resulted in an 8-8 record with Mason Rudolph and Duck Hodges at quarterback. “That’s our job - to play defense, get some stops, make the field manageable for the offense and try to get them,” linebacker Myles Jack said. This is about the $108 million defense that was supposed to provide the young, inexperienced (and cheap) offense time to get its feet under itself, most notably Trubisky. Pittsburgh got the ball to start the third quarter and put together a 10-play drive, but it was halted by a Chukwuma Okorafor penalty. He ran the ball two times for 7 yards, including a 1-yard touchdown run late in the second quarter to give the Steelers a 14-13 halftime lead. ![]() ![]() Trubisky went 20 of 32 for 207 yards and had a passer rating of 81.1. Still, the deep ball returned to a degree, he didn’t commit a turnover, the running game looked the best it has and Trubisky used his legs more out of purpose than necessity. Thursday’s 29-17 loss to the Browns at FirstEnergy Stadium was easily the best of his short Steelers career, but, in reality, there’s not much to compare it to, and he wasn’t very impressive against the Bengals and Patriots. He didn’t play well, either, but that’s not the point here. ![]()
